Carpenter Ants in Old Wood

A carpenter ant hollows out wood that is wet or already damaged: a barn post sunk in the dirt, a fence rail that never dries, a shed sill on bare ground, a window frame under a leak that was never repaired. Big-Headed Ants in Irrigated Turf

New sod gets watered every day while it roots, and that is big-headed ant heaven. The soldiers carry the oversized head the name describes. They run underground networks along the foundation, through the mulch beds and under the irrigated turf, crowd out other ants, tend sap-feeding insects on the ornamentals, and heap soil into little mounds where the sidewalk and the driveway meet the grass.

A granular bait on the trails and at the nest openings takes the colony down over the weeks that follow. Spraying the perimeter only kills the workers on top and leaves the network underground intact.

Crazy Ants in the Pump Box

Crazy ants are tiny, quick and jittery, and they are drawn to electrical fields. They pack into breaker panels, HVAC junction boxes, irrigation timers and pool pump controllers. When enough of them bridge two contacts the circuit shorts, and the dead ants draw in more. A rural Parrish property with a well pump and barn wiring is the kind of place we find them.

Treatment is bait around the perimeter of the equipment. If the ants are already inside a panel, we ask that the power be cut before anything goes into the enclosure, and we seal the gaskets and conduit entries afterward.
